Certainly good enough to play football matches without any real distractions in FIFA 16

EA smoothed out most of last year's game's occasional, yet infuriating, stuttery performance during penalties and free kicks. These are moments when you need to kick the ball at exactly the right time (according to the moving arrow on the screen) by pushing a button, and stuttering animation often led to botched penalties and free kicks. I still saw some stutters during a free kick, though. Which is to say: it's not perfect just yet. The defensive AI improvements also apply to the opposing team - it's going to take some adaptation on your part, as getting through defenders is harder than ever.

Career mode has changed. They’re not sweeping changes to the whole game, but they are substantial enough to be talked about and looked forward to. Things like scout reports lasting a year, rather than 3 months in FIFA 15, free agent transfers from outside the window to bolster your squad when suffering from a lot of injuries, the ability to loan players for 2 years and more realistic transfers, prices and budgets mean that this game is going to be closer to what a real player and manager career would be like, and it’s a welcome change.

The A.I. controlling my teammates never felt like they were trying as hard as I was to win. I changed strategy settings to make them more attack heavy or more defensive and they all still seemed to act the same. If I wanted to get a steal or stop a shot, I had to take control of the closest player and do it myself. I enjoy being in control over the whole team, but I would still like the A.I. players to do their jobs. If the other team is moving downfield with the ball, don’t just stand there, make a play on the ball! It would be a lie to say that the graphics on this game are incredible, but they’re definitely not bad.

Certainly good enough to play football matches without any real distractions. Not only that, but if the graphics were any more intense my aging 2013 Nexus 7 wouldn’t be able to handle them, so I’m glad EA didn’t take things too much further. Again, that’s not to say that they’re bad. In fact, they’re comparable to console quality graphics from a decade ago, and that’s pretty good. Ranked seasons is now more streamlined, allowing you to search for a new match immediately if you're happy to continue with the same team. Otherwise, it's as you were as you attempt to win some silverware, climb the divisions, or at least avoid the dreaded relegation.

There are some more minor improvements which have been made. Simple things from more options at set-pieces to having the offside lines during a replay. Yes - for whatever reason, EA Sports made the ridiculous decision to remove the offside lines from offside replays in FIFA 15. Referees are still up to their usual tricks. Getting in the way of passes, obstructing players and making horrible decisions or lack of any decision at all. Other online offerings remain largely unaltered. Online Seasons, co-op seasons, friendlies, and Pro Clubs all make their return with nothing new worth mentioning.

If you're playing online, there will be some time needed for the community to adjust to the new gameplay mechanics, but otherwise you should be able to jump in without missing a beat. Match Day Live once again offers accurate and true-to-life player ratings and events, so you can recreate the biggest matches of the weekend in the game.

As you would expect, the women play very similarly to the men. While it could all be in my head, the women seemed to be slightly more aggressive when going for tackles. This is far from a complaint, as it only makes the game more exhilarating. If there is one complaint, however, it is that the game only features the aforementioned twelve clubs. There are a ton of women’s leagues that deserve to get some recognition, and hopefully that comes next year. Until then, including women’s teams in FIFA is both a great step forward, and a breath of fresh air.
