The FIFA series took the next step in player rendering this year. The physics goodness is not limited to player-on-player sequences. The roll of the ball on the grass and the sight of blades of grass rising and falling appropriately during close-ups is pretty.

This results in a lot of attacking play coming through the middle, where the more realistic dribbling either works really well, or frustrates beyond belief. You can’t turn on a sixpence any more, and you’ll have to learn how to use the sprint button and trick stick to get by, or else rely on quick movement and passing. It’s an impressive re-enactment of the beautiful game, but it also reduces the fun factor. Those who hanker for a more realistic football experience will delight in this, but those of you who just want to lose yourself in a video game may find it less fun. But oh, when it all works, it’s delicious. I lost count of the times I shouted “Xbox, record that!” or hit the Share button. Numerous times I visibly jumped from my seat in excitement, the swelling of the crowd cheering me on. Despite it all, there are moments of absolute gaming bliss to be had here.
As for the online play, very little to nothing has changed from years past. You still play in a league and play one on one with one another. Getting into a match is a fairly easy process with the only issues appearing in game. Latency issues seemed to be rare but the one time they did pop up resulted in the game dropping entirely. You then wait at a screen which calculates which team would have won by using statistics of the match. This is a good idea but ends up being nothing but frustrating as you see yourself lose a match you think would have went your way. Thankfully, you do not have to rely on the computer tallying the winner and loser very often.
Offline, the gameplay doesn’t fare much better. The computer AI still hasn’t found a sweet spot between challenging and downright cheating. In addition to forcing the player into a very distinct playstyle (quick passes and air through balls for days), the AI will still decide that it wants to win at times and there’s not much the player can do about it. I was playing a game as Liverpool that was completely in my control before the computer decided that it would score two straight 25+ yard screamers from outside the box and then, in the 90th minute, get a phantom penalty call in their favor. This is a common occurrence that has plagued the series for so long that the community documents the “EA Scripting” every year.
If the game drops out regularly enough, therefore, it becomes effectively unplayable. This issue is undoubtedly frustrating if you've lost the time and energy you've invested in grinding through matches to build up a solid roster of players. But player grievances are intensified if they've spent real money to expedite the whole team-building process only to find that they're suddenly stuck in a position where their in-game currency is being depleted for arbitrary technical reasons—if they're able to even play the game in the first place. It's difficult to tell how many FIFA 15 players have spent real money on the game, and how much money those players have spent. But people have written comments on both the iTunes and Google Play store saying that they've lost players and progress after spending real cash to get them. Some claim they haven't even received FIFA points after purchasing them.
